Beautiful .58 Caliber Model 1864 Cartridge Box by Oliver of Pittsburg
Click on an image to enlarge

This is a neat piece! It is an original Civil War soldier's cartridge box. This is the classic .58 caliber style that was designed to be used with the .58 caliber Springfield rifles that were so heavily used during the Civil War. The outer flap still has the clear embossed "US" lettering. You can also see a portion of the oval ordnance department inspector stamp on the lower left hand side of the outer flap. When you raise the outer flap you are greeted by the "H.W. OLIVER PITTSBURGH-PA" mark on the flap of the implement compartment. These Oliver boxes were made without the standard inner flap and since they didn't use the inner flap they would sew the "ears" directly onto the outer flap. The "ears" are both present on this one. The box has the Civil War maker mark of H.W. Oliver from Pittsburg, Pennsylvania. According to the maker book Oliver only had army contracts for cartridge boxes in 1863 and 1864. That lets us know that this one is definitely a Civil War production cartridge box. The innermost compartment has one of the two original tins intact with a fine look. On the bottom of the box it has both of the original roller buckle as well as the finial and the original closure tab. This is a good displaying well worn cartridge box by Oliver that will look great beside your Civil War rifle.
