This is apiece that you seldom see offered these days. it is an original Civil War era tompion that was used to keep dirt and other things out of the end of the barrel. This is the version that is illustrated as photo #2 at the top of page 332 of the Gun Tool book by Shaffer, Rutledge and Dorsey. They states that it is a commercially made tompion that was sold by high end retailers such as Schuyler, Hartley & Graham of New York. The piece is made of wood with a cork ring on the center that is tapered to fit the barrel. As you can see this one is in excellent non-excavated condition all the way around.
