Florida Found William Crumpton Made 1815-1822 Eagle Infantry Button GI38

This is a tough to find button that will date from about 1815-1822. This is the pattern listed as GI3838 in Albert's button book. It is the pewter 1-piece uniform button that was worn by the infantry soldiers. The face of the button has the Union eagle with the shield by her side. In the center of the shield it has the script style "I" for the infantry branch of service. On the back of the button you can still see part of the maker's mark of "CRUMPTON * PHILA". This is the mark of William Crumpton who made uniform buttons from 1807-1822 in Burlington, New Jersey and Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. The shank is is still solidly intact on the reverse of the button. This button was found years ago at Fort San Marcos de Apalachee near Tallahassee. More importantly, this button is directly related to Jackson’s visit there in 1818 during the first Seminole War. This is a nice displaying early U.S. infantry coat button.
