Fine Patriotic Case With Lady Liberty Design for a 9th Plate Image
Click on an image to enlarge
This is a cool looking authentic Civil War era patriotic image case. This one is the size known to collectors as the ninth plate image and is made of the brown thermoplastic material known to collectors oftentimes as gutta purcha. This means that the image measures approximately 2 inches by 2.5 inches in size. It has the usual opening on the inside for a single image and it has the original cloth on the one side. What makes it special is on the outside of the case. It has the profile view of Lady Liberty. This is the version that is illsutrated as figure #367 design case in the wonderful 1988 copy-written book entitled Union Cases; A Collector's Guide to the Art of America's First Plastics by Krainik, Krainik, and Walvoord. It still retains the original paper Holmes, Booth & Hayden maker label. This will make a very fine home for your image if you are missing the case.
