Rare Charleston South Carolina Police Uniform Button SCP296A1
Click on an image to enlarge
Here is a beautiful uniform button from the Palmetto state. This is the version that is listed as SCP296Am1 in Tice's button book. This is the 23mm COAT version of the button that was worn by the Charleston, South Carolina City Police. As Tice states in the book "Collectors have excavated several 1850's Charleston police buttons from Confederate campsites." The buttons are beautifully design with the Charleston City coat of arms in the center. Across the top it proudly reads "CHARLESTON" and on the bottom is "POLICE". On the reverse of the button it has the original back and shank intact. These buttons were made the Waterbury Connecticut firm of Scovill and it has their maker's marking still visible. This is a very cool button in nice excavated condition.
