This is a very fine ink autograph of Confederate general William Ruffin Cox (1832 - 1919). Cox was born on March 11th 1832 in Halifax County, North Carolina. When the War started he was a major in the 2nd North Carolina Infantry. At the battle of Chancellorsville, he was wounded 5 times. After the battle of Cold Harbor, he was promoted to Brigadier General. He was with Robert E. Lee at Appomattox and led the last organized attack by Lee's Army. After the Civil War, he served in the House of Representatives and was Secretary of the Senate from 1893 to 1900. The autograph is accompanied by a printed biography of his service as well as a modern Xerox image of the General. The paper that the autograph is on measures 5 inches by 2 inches in overall size. He signs it in ink with the "Secretary" notation so we know it would have been signed between 1893 and 1900. It is a fine piece of history!
