Very Scarce Civil War Embroidered Engineer's "Castle" Officer's Hat Insignia
Click on an image to enlarge
This piece is beautiful! It is a gorgeous officer's embroidered hat insignia. This is the pattern that is known as the officer's engineer hat pin because that is the higher ranking style of officer's hat that it would have originally adorned. This style of hat insignia is a private purchased variant of the one illustrated on page 182 of the insignia book by Campbell and O'Donnell. The center of the piece has the beautiful Engineer Castle. This is the version that has the separately cast castle applied to the backing. The castle is in silver color in the center with large embroidered golden wreath. The brass used to make up the designs still retains a beautiful ancient gray silvered color to the castle and the gold on the wreath. On the back of the piece you can see the stitching to produce the piece. You can see that it is the version that was sewn directly onto the hat instead of using the attachment loops. The overall size of the piece measures 2-1/2 inches by 1-1/2 inches. This is a superb piece from all angles.
