Columbus Ohio Made Civil War Traveling Surgeon's Kit with 3 Pieces Remaining
Click on an image to enlarge
This is a cool little piece from Ohio. This is an original pocket size traveling surgeon's kit from the Civil War era. The Moroccan leather covered case measures 7 inches by 2 inches and stands 1-1/4th inches tall. The case displays well but the top is separated and missing one edge piece. Inside it has the original liner intact. There are three of the original instruments remaining. There are two blade and the retractor hook. The pieces each have the fine quality bone handles. Each of the pieces are marked "J. FENTON" with the "COLUMBUS" location. The maker book states that Joseph Fenton was in business in Columbus, Ohio from 1843 until 1862. On the bottom of the case, it has some writing that appears to be dated 1854. What a cool piece of Civil War medical history!
