This is a superb looking excavated Civil War coat size uniform button for the state of Virginia. It has very nice detail to the face of the button with a solid amount of the gold gilding remaining on the face. The Virginia seal has the motto of Virginia around the edge of "SIC SEMPER TYRANNIS" which is Latin and translates as "Thus unto tyrants". The original back and shank are present with the correct Civil War retailer's mark of Canfield Brothers & Company of Baltimore. These were made by the Scovill Company in Waterbury, Connecticut and sent down south to be sold prior to the Civil War. This is the style listed as figure VA12 in Albert's book and VA221a1 in Tice's book. This is a fantastic dug Virginia button for any collection.
