1863 Dated South Carolina Letter with Autograph of Rear Admiral John Dahlgren

Here is a beautifully written letter from the Civil War with a vividly clear autograph of Rear Admiral John A. Dahlgren Letter .This letter is about a court-martial aboard the U.S.S. New ironsides. The letter is two pages of writing on one large folded page. The overall size measures 7-7/8ths inches by 9-3/4ths inches. It has the bold heading from "Flag Steamer 'Philadelphia, off Morris Island", South Carolina and is dated September 16, 1863. The letter is addressed to Lieutenant Commander Edward Simson. Edward Simpson (March 3, 1824 – December 1, 1888) would go on to rise to the rank of Read Admiral. Rear Admiral John A. Dahlgren was commanding the Flag Steamer Philadelphia sent this letter to Lieutenant Commander Edward Simpson, commanding the U.S.S. Passaic. The letter is appointing him as a member of the Naval Court Martial for the trial of the Chief Engineer of the USS Canandaigua. He was ordered to report to the USS New Ironsides. The Admiral signs it in ink "J A Dahlgren". and he adds his rank. The letter is accompanied by a modern made xerox image of the two Admirals in Uniform.
