Wonderful 1600's Northern European Saber With Ornate Iron Basket Guard
Click on an image to enlarge
What a cool looking sword from the 1600's! This sword is designed with a study and fearsome 33-1/4th inch long full-length blade. It is crafted with the double edges and a spearpoint blade that measures 3-3/4ths inches at the widest point. The sword has the well-made iron half-basket guard with single recurved quillon. It also has the globular bars and pommel cap. It has the guard shell with repousse design which would have not been easy for the swordmaker to craft. It has the original wire-wrapped grip with Turk's heads. One thing that is cool about the blade is that it shows an old armorer's mark stamped into the metal. The blade shows some scattered salt and pepper oxidation with some imperfections to cutting edge from use and age. As you can see, the guard has a smooth dark patination with some minor loosening of wire on grip. One side of guard is missing on the non-display side. This sword would have been made for use in Northern Europe, possibly Denmark or Sweeden. What a cool piece from hundreds of years ago!
