This is a great looking U.S. military sword. It is the famous pattern made by the Nathan Starr Company of Middleton, Connecticut. This is the scarce contract model of 1818. According to the books there were 10,000 of these delivered in 1820 and 1821. This one has the hand guard made of iron and it still has a fine contour to the metal. It still retains fine amounts of the original factory black paint. It has a full-length 32 inch blade that has a nice gray color. At the base of the blade it has the "US" stamp along with the inspector initials "LS" which stands for Luther Sage who approved it for the U.S. Government. It also has the vividly clear "N.STARR" maker's mark. The iron guard and grip are present and the handle is present and still retains a good bit of the leather. The swords were produced without having a wire wrapping. They simply relied on the ridges in the handle to provide better grip. The sword is accompanied by the original Starr patent scabbard. The scabbard is complete with both mounts and rings intact as well as the original drag and throat. It is an original nice looking early sword and scabbard from U.S. history.
