Gorgeous Indian War Major General's Double Breasted Frock Coat by Browning King
Click on an image to enlarge
What a fantastic display piece! This attractive and exceptionally well made Major Generals frock coat dates from the late 1870’s. It has a fine grade dark blue wool body with darker blue velvet collar & cuffs. The bottom edge of the coat is unhemmed. The double breasted coat has 3 groups of 3 buttons on each side indicating a rank of Major General. Each cuff has 3 smaller buttons and the tails have 4 larger buttons. The sleeves are lined in striped cotton and the body is lined with a dark polished cotton material. There is an inside breast pocket on the left side and 2 tail pockets lined in brown cotton. There’s a label in the back of the collar that reads "Browning King & Co. New York”. William Browning first appears in the 1870 New York Census as a maker of uniforms and clothing. As you can see, the blue of the wood has a deep dark rich color that displays superbly. This one displays as well as a Civil War Major general's coat at just a fraction of the price.
