DOUBLE WOUNDED! 35th Mass. Infantry Civil War Soldier's Smoothside Canteen
Click on an image to enlarge
This is a nice original Civil War soldier's canteen that is in non-excavated condition. You can just picture the soldier using this one in battle or in a Civil War campsite. This is the style referred to by collectors as the "smoothside" pattern because it is made without the reinforcement rings that were designed on the side of the canteen body. It has all three of the original strap loops present on the sides of the canteen. At the top of the canteen it has the original tin spout intact. What makes this piece special is that the soldier put his name on the sides in paint. Probably for display in his house or his veteran's hall. It reads "J.D. ANSERSON / Co. B. / 35th MA VOL. INF." The records show that James Anderson was a 35 year old carpenter. He enlisted in the 35th Massachusetts Infantry on August 19th 1862. He served with the 35th until January 1st 1865 when he transferred to the Veteran Reserve Corps. The 35th saw lots of hard action during the War including, Antietam, Fredericksburg and then to Vicksburg in the west. They were later sent back to Virginia and the battles of the Wilderness, Spotsylvania and Cold Harbor. The records show that Anderson was wounded twice during his service. The first wound came on November 16th 1863 at Campbell's Station, Tennessee and the second was on July 30th 1864 at Petersburg, Virginia. A brief printout of Anderson's service and that of the 35th Massachusetts's Infantry will accompany the canteen. This is a nice used but not abused canteen with a great soldier history.
