This is a fantastic piece of medical history from after the Civil War! It is an original post-Civil War era traveling amputation medical kit. You can just image the things a piece like this kit would say if it could talk. The mahogany box is in excellent fine looking untouched original condition. It measures 16 inches across and is 4-1/4th inches deep and stands 4 inches tall. The brass center plaque is present as is the small brass escutcheon around the key hole. Several of the parts and the paper label has the maker marking of the firm of Tiemann of New York. The paper label reads "G. Tiemann & Co. / Manufacturers of Surgical Instruments /107 Park Row N.Y." Tiemann was active at this address from 1886-1900. The one blade and two picks are present in the lower section and they are marked by the Tiemann company. There is also the screw down style tourniquet. It has the removable top lid. The top section holds the large amputation saw as well as the large snippers for rounding the bone after the amputation itself. This is a fantastic set that displays quite well and would be appreciated by any medical collector.
