Scarce Version Goodyear's Patent Hard Rubber U.S. Navy Great Coat Button
Click on an image to enlarge
This is a very tough to find version of one of my favorite buttons of the Civil War! It is the hard rubber style great coat button worn by the United States Navy. This is the pattern illustrated as figure NA136 in Albert's button book and as NA241a1 in Tice's button book, both of which we sell. It has the bold "U.S.N." lettering on the front with the three stars below and the anchor below the stars. This one has a smaller anchor compared to the other version of the hard rubber navy that you usually encounter. It has the four holes in the center that were designed to sew the button on the coat through. On the back of the button it has the cool and correct backmark that reads "NOVELTY RUBBER Co.NEW YORK/ GOODYEAR'S PATENT. 1851". This one is in superb condition all the way around. '
