Beautiful Non-Dug Virginia Military Institute Cadet Coat Button by Robinson
Click on an image to enlarge
This is a very pretty non-excavated coat size button for the Virginia Military Institute Cadet. It has the proud lettering on the face that reads "V.M.I. CADET" and also has the Virginia motto of "SIC SEMPER TYRANNIS" which translates as "Thus unto tyrants". In the center of the button it has the Virginia states seal. This is the style with the "R&W ROBINSON" backmark that is in the ribbon with the eagle in between the ends. The back still retains a fine amount of the original silver wash. This is the version that is listed as SU408 in Albert's button book and VAS294b1 in Tice's book. The face of the button has excellent detail and a trace amount of the original gold gilt remaining in the protected areas. This is a great classic Civil War era coat button from the Virginia Military Institute.
