Well Marked 1834 Dated Springfield Arsenal .69 Caliber Military Musket
Click on an image to enlarge

This is a very good looking musket for the price! It is an original .69 caliber military musket from the famous Springfield Arsenal. The lockplate has the clear "US" and eagle marking as well as the desirable "SPRINGFIELD" arsenal mark and 1834 production date. The action works well on both positions. The barrel is full-length with the original proof marks still faintly visible at the base of the barrel. When this one left the arsenal it would have been a flintlock and later it was converted to percussion so it could still be used for military service in either the Mexican or Civil War. It has both of the original sling swivels still intact and they are both frozen in place. It has a modern made replacement ramrod in the channel underneath the barrel. The stock has a very pleasing look all over and you can see the traces of the inspector cartouches on the flat of the stock opposite of the lockplate. IOn the back side of the shoulder stock, it has the carved name of "Rawlings" cut into the wood but in my opinion, it was added in modern times. These .69 caliber smoothbore muskets were heavily used during the Civil War by the infantrymen of both sides because it is what they had in the arsenal when the war broke out.
