Scarce U.S. Colonial "Turkey" Style Eagle Coat Button Like GI25 1792-1798

This is a very early American uniform button. This is the coat size button that was worn by members of the continental army from 1792 till at least 1798. It is the coat size version of the button illustrated as GI25 in Albert's button book. It has the eagle in the center that almost looks like a turkey instead of an eagle. Many of the founding fathers wanted the turkey to be the country's symbol, including Benjamin Franklin. You will often hear collector call this style of button the turkey-eagle. These buttons are made of pewter which is why they often have very poor detail. This one is a good bit better than most with some edge losses. You can see the eagle and few of the stars along the top edge. On the reverse of the button the shank is still present. This is a very nice displaying coat size button from colonial America that has a lot of character! Item #: C261 (Sold)
