1863 Dated Civil War Springfield Pattern Military Rifle With Clear Date Marking
Click on an image to enlarge
This is a neat looking original Civil War model 1861 Springfield military rifle with a model 1863 lockplate. This one has the 1863 production date on the lockplate as well as the desirable "SPRINGFIELD" arsenal mark and Union eagle. The plate itself is the model 1863 with the rest of the lockplate and gun being the famous model 1861 pattern contract rifle. It has the mechanics of the lockplate that catch on both positions just as it should. The barrel is full-length with the original front sight intact. The rear sight has been gone for eons. At the breech of the barrel you can only see traces of the inspector marks. On the inside of the barrel it still has the rifling remaining all the way down but it is dark as a stovepipe with some pitts. The stock is full-length with a pretty grain to the wood. The gun still has both of the two sling swivels underneath the gun. It has a replacement ramrod of an incorrect design in the channel under the barrel that is full-length. It has a pleasing look all over that makes a nice display. This is a nice authentic Civil War 1863 dated Springfield lockplate on a contract rifle.
