Fine Looking Massachusetts Infantry Shako Military Hat From the 1870's
Click on an image to enlarge

This is a great looking piece and we know the soldier that wore it! It is an original shako style military hat from the 1870's or 1880's. We know that it was worn by a soldier from the Massachusetts Volunteer Infantry because of their ornament on the front of the cap and the buttons. The hat stands about 6 inches tall not including the plume which is another couple of inches. It has the classic Civil War cuff size Massachusetts state seal buttons on each side of the original brim. The front of the hat has the brass plate with the Infantry hunting horn insignia in the center. It has some wear but as you can see it displays quite well. When you turn the hat over you see the remnants of the maker's label in the inside. The label is from the firm of Bent & Bush of Boston. This is a cool looking original hat that doesn't cost thousands.
