Ring Hammer! Very Cool Looking Dutch Model 1854 Cavalry Carbine
Click on an image to enlarge
This gun has one of the most interesting designs of the Civil War era. This one is officially known as the Dutch model 1854 cavalry carbine. This example was manufactured in 1857 in Maastricht and marked with the small King William government proofmarks. In front of the hammer, the lockplate is stamped with the "crown/HL/57". It has the clear, "1858 7" on the upper left barrel flat, with the "218" on the left flat of the barrel breech. It has the large round government cartouche on the right side of the shoudlerstock. "1858/D 218" on the buttplate tang. Features fixed sights, rifled bore, distinctive loop hammer, and a saddle ring on the left on an extension off of the side plate. These carbines were known to have heavy recoil., It has the full-length 17-3/4th inch barrel with the shallow but visible rifling that is about .64 caliber. The mechanics still catch crisply on both of the positions. The stock is beautifully crafted from a single piece of furniture grade wood. On the back side of the stock, opposite of the lockplate it uses a double ring saddle ring system like that of the Austrian Kammerkarabiner 1851. This is a great looking gun as you see with a ton of character!
