Very Nice 18 Inch Long Civil War Era Cannon Portfire Lighter
Click on an image to enlarge
Here is a fine original long pattern example of the artillery portfire. These were used to ignite ship cannon that used wicks in the fuse hole rather than the friction primers. Inside it has a powder solution that burned slowly. It was held by the artilleryman for use as a wick to ignite the cannon blasts. This one is in very nice condition and was once part of the massive artillery collection of Bannerman's of New York. He was the man that bought up the Civil War Surplus after the War. This is the 18-inch version and displays very well. Nice addition to any collection.
