Click on an image to enlarge

This is a beautiful original Civil War era hat insignia. This is the embroidered hunting horn hatpin that denotes the infantry branch of service. Most of these are embroidered using golden threads but this one is made using silver material. This is the style that was popular from about 1835 until 1855 or so but they do show up being used during the Civil War. The piece measures about 2.5 inches across and is 2 inches tall. It is in great looking non-excavated shape and even has most of the original backing intact. It has the original backing intact on the reverse. This is a variant of the pattern that is illustrated as figure #309 in the wonderful insignia book by Campbell & O'Donnell. This is a great piece!
