Beautiful Springfield Armory .50 Caliber Model 1865 Spencer Infantry Rifle Alteration
Click on an image to enlarge
This is a great looking gun with a cool history! This gun started out life as a Model 1865 Spencer 7 shot repeating cavalry carbine. In 1871, 1,108 of these guns were taken to the Springfield Armory and altered for use as an Infantry Rifle. During the alteration they thinned down the frame of the gun and added a new 32-1/2 inch .50 caliber barrel with three lands and grooves. They added the stabilizer cut-off to make them safer. They added a wooden forestock held in place by two barrel bands and added an iron ramrod with a ribbed head. On the top of the barrel it has the rear sight base intact. At the base of the barrel they added the serial number to match the one on the original receiver. This one is serial number 32,020. You can still see a good bit of the 1865 model designation on the top of the frame as well as the Burnside Rifle Company production marking. Since it was designed for infantry use they removed the saddle bar and ring on the side opposite of the lockplate. It has both of the sling swivels present underneath the gun. The wood of the gun has a beautiful tone and at the wrist of the stock it has the cartouche from the Springfield arsenal. The mechanics of the gun work crisply on all positions. It has the fine original magazine tube in the butt of the gun. This is a great gun with a very cool history!
