This is a piece that you seldom see offered for sale these days. It is an original Civil War artillery shod handspike for large artillery pieces. This implement was used to turn and position large heavy mortars or other artillery pieces. It stands 5 feet 2-1/2 inches tall. The wood still retains some traces of the original green arsenal paint just as it did when they made it. The wood has several ancient age cracks that give it character. At the bottom it has the original iron cap in place. This piece was used so the wood wouldn't break when the moving force as applied to the pole. This is a fantastic piece of Civil War artillery history for the price of a U.S. belt and buckle costs these days!
