Very Interesting Possible Common Rifle Civil War Socket Bayonet
Click on an image to enlarge
Here is a very interesting Civil War socket bayonet. Upon 1st glance, it looks like one of the socket bayonet made for use with the early production muskets forced into service during the Civil War. This version is quite scarce so they couldn't have made many. No one knows for sure on these, but it appears they were altered from the H&P bayonets made to use on the 1816 conversion muskets. The only thing that makes sense on them is they may have been altered to be used on some of the percussion common rifles. The have the model 1855 pattern blade with the "US" on the base. The socket is very similar to the 1816 that doesn't use a lock ring. It has a long different style cut out for the musket lug. On the top of the socket, it has the letter and digits that would have hand fitted it to the musket or rifle. This one appears to be "U 15". The bayonet is in fine condition with honest wear and a pleasing look. Don't miss this one.
