This is an attractive excavated coat size version of the Confederate Infantryman's coat button. On the face it has the clear block style "I" which denotes the Infantry branch of service. This button has the original back intact with the shank as you can see. It has the correct Civil War backmark of "HT&B MANCHESTER" which is the mark of the Hammond, turner & Bates Company of Manchester, England. This is the style listed as CS171 in Albert's button book and CSI200a1 in Tice's button book. This fine button would have been imported through the blockade to the Confederate soldiers. These Infantry versions of the Manchester Confederate buttons are one of the tougher letter buttons to get. It is in complete condition and is a must have for any Civil War Confederate button collection.
