Scarce Original Sponge and Rammer for a Field Size Civil War Cannon
Click on an image to enlarge
Here is a piece that is tough to find. It is an original wooden Sponge and rammer combination for a Civil War cannon. These were used by the cannoneer to push the shell or shot all the way down into the barrel to ensure the cannon fire would shoot the projectile. The other side would have had a sponge applied to the wood for cleaning out the powder residue in the barrel before it was reloaded. Without cleaning the barrel with one of these it was much more likely to spark and cause a misfire while loading the next projectile. This is the large size that would have been used for a field size version of Civil War cannon. It measures 70 inches in overall length. As you can see it still retains some traces of the original arsenal green paint. This is a fine piece of Civil War artillery.
