I love the brass furniture on this style gun. It is the model 1863 military rifle known to collectors as the "Zouave" pattern rifle. We don't really know how they got the name but it has been used for decades by collectors. These were made by the famous firm of Remington in Ilion, New York and it is so marked on the side of the lockplate. Also on the lockplate it has the clear production date of 1863 stamped behind the hammer. The mechanics of the gun are fully functioning on all positions. As you can see the barrel is full length with the original front and rear sights intact. The rear sight has both of the original two leafs intact. At the breech of the gun it has the matching 1863 production date as well as the Remington and Government inspector marks. On the side of the breech of the barrel it has the stamping of "STEEL" to denote the high quality steel used for the barrel production. Beside the Steel marking it has the "R.K.A." stamping that let us know that it was inspected by Remick K. Arnold who approved the gun for use by the Government. It has The bore of the barrel still has the very distinctive three lands and grooves visible. The stock has a very fine color to the walnut wood and has a fine grain of the walnut. On the flat opposite of the lockplate it has the pair of inspector cartouches still visible. This is where the gun was approved for military service by the government. One is "BH" which stands for Benjamin Hannis and the other is "HDJ" for Henry D. Jennings. Under the hammer it has had a piece of walnut inset to repair a missing piece as you can see in the images. This gun design has always been one of my favorites because of all of the brass furniture. The brass parts include the patchbox and buttplate, barrel bands, triggerguard and nose cap. All of the brass on the gun has a beautiful golden color patina from the years that displays superbly from all angles. It still retains one of the two original sling swivels and the ramrod is a nice original. This is a great looking Remington rifle that displays very well.
