1850 Dated Single Shot Military Pistol by H. Aston of Middletown, Connecticut
Click on an image to enlarge

This is an original single shot Civil War era military model 1842 pistol. This one was made by the firm of H. Aston of Middletown, Connecticut and you can see traces of the maker mark on the side of the lockplate. It also has the clear 1850 date of manufacture. The mechanics of the lockplate catches well on both positions with the spur of the hammer that broke off eons ago so it is hard to cock back. The barrel is full length with a dark tone all over. At the breech of the barrel you can see the government inspector marks just as they should be. This one would have fired a .54 caliber round ball. It is missing the ramrod under the barrel and also the swivel style ramrod guide. It appears to have been gone for a long time. These have always been one of my favorite patterns of pistol because of how they stand out because of the brass on the barrel band, triggerguard and backstrap. The gun has an attractive mellow look to the brass. This one has a pretty walnut stock that is of furniture grade wood with a look that you can tell saw lots of service. On the flat of the stock opposite of the lockplate it has the outline of the two inspector cartouches. These cartouches are where the gun was approved for military service. This is an attractive original single shot military model Aston pistol that doesn't cost thousands.
