Massive .71 Caliber Civil War Austrian Pattern Short Barrel Carbine
Click on an image to enlarge
This is one of the coolest designed weapons of the Civil War era. This is the gun officially known to collectors as the model 1851 Austrian carbine. They were made and imported to the states, both North & South before and during the Civil War. In front of the hammer on the lock plate it would have had the production date at one time but the digits partially visible but I can't make them out. Behind the hammer you can still see a very faint part of the Austrian style Eagle stamping. They are .71 in caliber and have the very short barrel which would have made loading easy but it had to have kicked like a mule. It has the very deep multi-groove rifling. The barrel is full-length at 14-1/2 inches in length. This is the version that was made with a ramrod under the barrel and the ramrod is an incorrect replacement. They were produced with and without the ramrod during their manufacture. The stock has a rich dark tone all over with a nice grain. On the back side of the stock it has had the original double ring style saddle rings removed so they must have just used the base as a single saddle ring. The action works very crisply on all positions. This is a great looking gun that is a scarce type of weapon.
