This is a very nice looking sword and we know who owned it. It is the dress sword from the veteran's organization of Union veterans of the Civil War. Known as the G.A.R. or Grand Army of the Republic they were the best known of the veterans groups after the Civil War. This sword has a full-length blade and you can still see the etching on the blade. On each side it has the patriotic and floral designs. On one side it has the etched image of President Abraham Lincoln. At the base of the blade it has the retailer marking of the Oak Hill Clothing Company of Boston, Massachusetts. The handguard has the beautiful clam shell design with the proud "GAR" lettering with anchor on one side and the crossed rifles on the other side. The original handle is intact with the black leather remaining over the grip. The sword is accompanied by a nice scabbard that has a fine look. The scabbard has the original drag, mounts, rings and throat intact. Between the top mount and throat, it has the jeweler quality engraving that proudly reads "Presented to / Past Commander E.B. Stillings / by his Comrades of / E.W. Kinsley Post No. 115 G.A.R. / Boston, Mass.". The records show that Ephriam B. Stillings enlisted with the 46th Massachusetts Infantry on August 21st 1862 and served with them and the 2nd Massachusetts Heavy Artillery where he mustered out on September 3rd 1865. After his service he had an impressive history with the Grand Army of the Republic. He was a member of the Kinsley Post as well as the Weld Post and also held several offices with the National G.A.R. A brief printout of Stillings and his services with the G.A.R. accompany the sword. This is a great displaying sword with attractive Lincoln etching and a rock solid identification.
