Click on an image to enlarge
What an original excavated coat size general service U.S. coat button. This is the pattern used during the 1820's and 1830's. It has the bold "US" letters above a wreath and the eagle up above. The original back and half of the shank are present with the traces of the "UNITED STATES" backmark. This is the style listed as figure GI71 in Albert's book and GEN200 in Tice's book. The verbal history that accompanied this button is that it was recovered several years ago near Mobile, Alabama. This is a fine looking piece with a nice recovery location.
