This is a great looking button. It is an original post-Civil War coat size uniform button for the state of Louisiana. The face of the button shows the mother pelican feeding her young. This is the correct post Civil War face and the backmark will date it from after the turn of the century. It has the backmark that reads the Pettibone maker's mark. The face of this button is and it has some of the original gold gilding remaining down in the recesses. This is a great looking non-excavated cuff button with the post-Civil War era maker's mark. The Civil War one cost well over $400 so own this one for a fraction of that price.
