Here is a tough to find book! This is an original 1862 Dated edition of The Art of War by Baron De Jomini who was the General and Aide-de-camp to the Emperor of Russia. It was translated from the French by 2 engineers of the U.S. Army. The book was printed by Lippincott of Philadelphia and is so marked on the title page. It is 410 pages and is hardbound with the original cover intact. The cover is worn from service but still has a pleasing look. All of the pages appear to be present as are the pull-out diagrams in the back. On the inside coder it has the pencil inscription of the owner. It reads "George W. Atherton Lieut. Co. K. 10th C.V.". The records show that George Washington Atherton enlisted as a 1st Lieutenant int he 10th Connecticut Infantry on December 4th 1861. He was promoted tot he rank of Captain on January 5th 1862. He resigned from service on June 10th 1863. Our friends at CivilWarData.com even had an image of Atherton in uniform. The printouts will accompany the book at no extra charge. It is a cool book with history!
