Here is a scarce little book. It is the Manual entitled "AN ELEMENTARY TREATISE OF ADVANCED-GUARD, OUT-POST, AND DETACHMENT SERVICE OF TROOPS, AND THE MANNER OF POSTING AND HANDLING THEM IN THE PRESENCE OF AN ENEMY" and is so marked on the title page. It also has the 1833 date of printing and the notation that it was printed by John Wiley of New York. This manual details how to place soldiers int he field during times of war and peace. The book has the original cover intact and you can see the gilded lettering on the spine. All of the pages appear to be present. What makes this book extra special is that it has the name "Whitmore" written on the inside of the cover. A previous owner attributes this to James Madison Whitmore. Whitmore was appointed to the West Point Military Academy from the state of Massachusetts on July 1st 1855. He graduated with the class of 1860 and was 8th in his class. On July 7th 1860 he enlisted in the 3rd U.S. Artillery and on May 5th 1861 he transferred to the Ordnance Corps and served in the US Army until he retired on March of 1900. During the War he was promoted to Captain and in March of 1865 received the Brevet promotion to Major. A very cool thing about the book is that it is notated throughout and was likely what he studied as a cadet or possibly during the Civil War service. A brief printout on his service will accompany the book.
