Brevet Brig. General Tactics Manual of the 3rd Massachusetts Heavy Artillery

This is an original Civil War infantry tactics manual that is identified to the soldier who carried it. On one of the inside pages it has the name of "W.S. Abert Col. 3d Mass. Arty" nicely written in ancient brown ink. The records show that Abert was a West pointer and he enlisted on June 18th 1855 at the rank of 2nd Lieutenant of the 4th U.S. Light Artillery. He mustered out of service on September 18th 1865 at Washington, D.C. During that time, he served with the 4th Light Artillery as well as the 6th U.S. Cavalry. He was breveted for service at Hanover Court House and Antietam. He was given command of the 3rd Massachusetts Heavy Artillery in December of 1864 at the rank of Colonel. In March of 1865, he was given the Brevet (honorary) rank of Brigadier General. The book itself is the 1863 edition of the first volume of Infantry Tactics manual of Silas Casey. This one was printed by Van Nostrand of New York in 1863. It appears that it still has most of the pull-out diagrams and pages intact. You can tell that this book was carried and used. It is a great piece from a hard fighting Yankee!
