This is a very attractive Civil War model 1863 Springfield military rifle. This one has the 1864 production date on the lockplate as well as the desirable "SPRINGFIELD" arsenal mark and Union eagle. It is still in excellent functional mechanical condition. The barrel is full-length with the original front and rear sight intact. The rear sight still has the original late production type single leaf present which is correct for this production gun. At the breech of the barrel you can still see the eagle stamp and proof marks. There is also the correct and matching 1864 production date still clearly visible. All of the metal parts have a nice brownish gray look as you can see. On the inside of the barrel it still has the original rifling remaining all the way down. The stock is full-length with a nice furniture grade grain to the wood. The stock has a nice very dark ancient tone to the walnut wood. On the back side of the stock, opposite of the lockplate, it has the remnants of the "ESA" cartouche. This is where the gun was approved for military use by the inspector Erskin A. Allin. This lets us know it is the correct Springfield wood. The gun has lost both of the sling swivels underneath the gun. It has very nice looking modern made replacement ramrod in the channel under the barrel. It has a pleasing look all over that makes a great display. This is a pretty and authentic Civil War 1864 dated Springfield rifle that displays well.
