Pretty Original Pressed Horn "Lanthorn" Powder Flask Missing Spout
Click on an image to enlarge
This is one of the coolest designed powder flasks that you will encounter. This is the pattern that is made out of pressed animal horn and is often referred to as a "Lanthorn" flask. The term lanthorn is used because they took the horn and treated it, shaped it and thinned it to transparency. It is an ancient term from when they would use this process to make covers for lanterns, hence Lanthorn. This one is very similar to the one used for the illustrations on page 397 in the Powder Flask book by Ray Riling. The sides of the flaks are made of the horn and is unadorned and the 2 pieces are joined by a brass pins around the edge. All four of the original hanging rings for the strap are still attached to the sides of the flask body. It is missing the spout from the top and is priced accordingly. This one has a great attic patina all over and as you can see, it displays quite well.
