Trimmed Down 1864 Dated Military Rifle by the Springfield Armory
Click on an image to enlarge
This is an interesting gun with a nice price! This one started out life as an original Civil War .58 caliber military rifle made by the Springfield Armory. The lockplate has the maker mark along with the Union eagle and the "US" mark. It also has the production date of 1864 stamped deeply into the lockplate behind the hammer. The mechanics of the lockplate still has spring and catches on both of the two positions. This one originally had a full-length 40 inch barrel that was trimmed down to the 33-3/4ths inch length we have today. The rear sight was removed and filled in long ago. The cut the stock back just in front of the rear barrel band. With this configuration, you can tell that it was used on the Homefront after its military service was over. In the channel under the barrel, it has a hand made metal ramrod. It has a neat a tone all over as you can see and you can still see the Springfield inspector cartouches on the back side of the stock, opposite of the lockplate. This is an attractive looking weapon that will display well on the wall of your relic room.
