Here is a gun that you very seldom see offered these days! It is an original U.S. model 1855 percussion rifle musket. This one was made in 1858 and is marked as such on the lockplate behind the hammer. The front of the lockplate has the stamping from the famous U.S. Springfield Arsenal. You can tell this model 1855 guns from a mile away because of the door that it on the side of the lockplate. This door opens up to reveal the Maynard tape primer system inside. Inventors were trying to figure a way not to have to use the percussion caps that were so widely utilized during his time period. One of the ways they tried was this Maynard system. Instead of the metal percussion cap, they used a roll of paper that had the charges spaced apart on roll, sort of like modern children's cap gun rolls. They had a spring that would feed the roll up underneath the nipple when the gun was cocked back. This worked well unless you were in back weather, or the rolls had been wet at one time, or the feeder spring on the inside broke, or one of dozens of other reasons. This is why this design was discontinued with the model 1861 rifle that came next. This one has fully functional mechanics inside the lockplate. The hammer is designed with the notch that was to cut the paper cap roll when it was fired. The barrel is full-length with the front and rear sights intact and the rear sight and it has single long range leaf remaining. The rear sight is the correct version for the earlier production of the 1855 muskets. At the breech of the gun you can see traces of the government inspector stamps with the traces of the production date still visible. In the inside of the barrel you can still see the original rifling going all the way down but it is dark with some pitting. The stock has a very pleasing look all over with a dark color to the walnut wood. It has both of the original sling swivels intact underneath the gun. In the channel underneath the barrel it has the original full-length ramrod. The nose cap is the version that is made of brass just as it should be. This is a cool looking gun!
