This is a neat gun. This is the tough to find model 1862 Colt revolver that is known to collectors as the "Pocket navy". They get their nickname because upon first glance they look like the model 1849 pocket revolver that is .31 caliber. When you look closer you see that this gun is .36 in caliber size and has several differences from the 1849. The back of the cylinder is rebated. The loading assembly is also different. The side of the triggerguard shoulder has the ".36 Cal." Marking to denote the caliber of the bore. You can still clearly see the "COLTS PATENT" mark on the side of the frame. The top of the barrel still has the Colt maker mark along with the New York City location. These guns were made in Hartford, Connecticut with the sales office being located in New York City. This one has the original full-length barrel that measures 4-1/2 inches in overall size. On the handle of the gun it has the original 1-piece walnut grips intact with an attractive amount of the original factory varnish. The gun has all matching serial numbers of "15,323" including the barrel wedge. Thanks to Colt's fine bookkeeping we know that this gun would have been manufactured in 1863 which was also only the third year of production for these guns. The metal parts have a pretty tone with the original blue finish and some of the frame case colors that displays well. The mechanics of the gun work on all positions. The stagecoach hold-up scene is still clearly present on the cylinder which is much more than you usually encounter. This is a good looking original scarce model 1862 Colt pocket navy revolver.
