This is a superb looking non-excavated Civil War coat size uniform button for the state of Virginia. It has superb detail to the face of the button with gold gilding remaining in just the right places to make everything stand out. This is the two piece construction on this button. Across the top of the button it has the bold "VIRGINIA" lettering. The Virginia seal which shows Virtus holding a spear in one hand and a sword in the other hand. She is standing with Tyranny at her feet. It also has the motto of Virginia around the edge of "SIC SEMPER TYRANNIS" which is Latin and translates as "Thus unto tyrants". The original back and shank are present with the correct Civil War maker's mark of "W.G. MINTZER . PHILd". This is the style listed as figure VA16 in Albert's book and VA230a2 in Tice's book. This is a fantastic non-dug Virginia button for any collection.
