This is a fine looking untouched piece! This is an original Civil War soldier's hat. It is the version known to collectors as the "Forage" style cap. It has the tall center section that folds forward. This one has a very pleasing color to the blue cloth that has a pretty tone after all of the years. It is just like it came out of the soldier's attic. There a couple of crude repairs to the cloth on several small spots of the hat. It has the original tarred brim and tarred leather chin strap intact and complete. The chin strap has the brass adjuster buckle present as well as both of the eagle buttons on the side. The eagle buttons have the "I" on the shield on the eagle's chest which denotes that it was worn by an infantry officer. The inside of the hat is also in nice "used but not abused" shape compared to most of the ones you encounter these days. It has the majority of the correct original leather sweat band present. On the top of the inside has the remnants of the paper maker's label. You can see the "G' on the paper label and if I am not mistaken, this is the maker's label of "T&G" which was the label of Murphy & Griswald. Thomas Murphy and William Griswald and Company manufactured 583,000 forage caps from 1862 to 1865. This is a very pleasing looking cap and any collector would be proud to have.
