Post Civil War "Buffalo Bullet" Often Mis-Labeled as a Whitworth
Click on an image to enlarge
Here is a very cool bullet that is often mislabeled. You often see this particular pattern of bullet labeled as a Whitworth sharpshooters bullet. They are not. This is one of the bullets that was designed after the war to be fired out of sharpshooters style plains rifles for the heavy barreled Sharps rifles. The bullet itself is .45 caliber, which is correct for either gun. The length of the bullet is 1.3 inches. The base of the bullet is completely different from that of the Confederate used Whitworth sharpshooter bullet. This is a very nice non-excavated version and displays well for only $45.
