Original Civil War 1865 Contract Made Tarred Canvas U.S. Knapsack
Click on an image to enlarge
This is a piece that is becoming tough to come across anymore. It is the authentic original of the Civil War soldier's tarred canvas knapsack. This style was heavily used by the soldiers from the North during the Civil War. This one is better than most of them that you encounter. It still retains the straps coming off of the back and it has the brass and iron buckles and hooks intact as well. On one of the straps you can still read a small portion of the stamp of the Ordnance Department inspector, Richards. Just above his marking is the contract date of 1865. On the other strap it has the larger and clear "1865" date. The canvas has an attractive appearance and has been stuffed on the inside to enhance the overall look. It has the wear and flaking to the finish on the leather as you can see but it still displays well. This is a fine display piece for your relic room that costs less than what a cartridge box costs these days.
