Excellent Civil War Era Georgia State Seal Coat Button by Van Wart
Click on an image to enlarge
This is a great looking original Civil War Georgia state seal uniform button. This is the style listed as GA5 in Albert's book and GA212A1 in Tice's Book. It has fine detail to the face of the button and a beautiful rich patina. On the back the shank is complete and you can clearly see the correct Civil War backmark of "VAN WART SON & Co.". As you can see they double stamped the maker's mark on the reverse which is a neat thing. These were made in England during the War and were to be imported to the Confederacy through the Union blockade. There is speculation whether they ever made it into service or not. I have not had an excavated example but one is needed to complete a collection of Civil War era manufactured Georgia buttons. This is a very fine displaying Confederate button.
