Excellent Civil War South Carolina State Seal by Manchester H.T.& B.
Click on an image to enlarge
This is a beautiful Civil War Confederate South Carolina State Seal coat button. This one is in beautiful untouched non-excavated condition with a very pleasing patina all over. It has the palmetto tree on the face of the button with the motto around the side. The motto reads "Animis Opibusque Parati" which translates as "Prepared in mind and Resources." This is the style that was run through the blockade from the firm of Hammond, Turner & Bates of Manchester England. On the back of the button it has the clear "MANCHESTER H.T.&B." backmark. The original shank is intact and in fine shape. The face has a nice amount of the gold gilt remaining in the recesses. This pattern is listed in Albert's button book as SC15a and in Tice's button book as CS260a1. This is a beautiful button that would be a superb addition to any collection.
