Here is a very cool gun with a fine look! This is a very nice looking British Military flintlock pistol. This is the pattern that is known as a Sea Service Flintlock Pistol Pattern 1801. It is crisply marked on the lock-plate "TOWER" behind the hammer. In front of the hammer it has the English Crown stamp and the "GR". This gun was made in the early 1800's because of the storekeeper stamp on the wrist of the stock. It has the "GR" lettering to go along with the "1805" date. The mechanics of the lockplate are still fully functional in all positions. This is the correct style for our War of 1812 timeframe as well as the European wars known as the Napoleonic Wars. The 1801 was the fourth Sea Service Pistol Pattern to come into use and was the last to utilize a 12 inch barrel. De Witt Bailey records that 27,800 pairs of this type were made in the 11 years to 1812 when production ceased. For further examples see Geoff Davies, Barry Chisnall & Clive Brook, "British Ordnance Single Shot Pistols", published by Maine Military, 2019, Chapter 7. During this timeframe, the British Government began to rely heavily upon the British privately owned gun trade and between 1804 and 1817 a total of 1,827,889 muskets, rifles, carbines, and pistols were manufactured for the Government. This pistol is one made by the British arsenal at the Tower of London. The 12 inch barrel stamped with two London proof marks. It has the correct English regulation brass military fittings for the grip cap, triggerguard, ramrod channel guide and this one was made without the nose cap. It has the brass tipped ram rod underneath the barrel. The gun has an overall length of 19-1/2 inches. It has the 1-piece walnut wood stock and the wood has the English markings on the side opposite of the lockplate near the very large belt hook. This is a very nice original Flintlock officer's pistol dating from the War of 1812 and Napoleonic era. What a cool looking gun!
